Do you look in the mirror and not recognise the person staring back at you? Getting old does mean that yes you will get more wrinkles but doesn’t mean you have to give up and let nature take its course.
There are several things you can do to knock years off your appearance and they are really easy to incorporate in to everyday life! I am not going to tell you to get regular botox or a facelift!
As a nation we are over stimulated with coffee, under nourished and dehydrated. Most people do not hit HALF of the daily quota of 8 cups of water per day, and on top of that they rely on coffee to keep them going.
On waking drink a glass of water (have it on your bed side table), then instead of having a tea or a coffee to stimulate you start the day with a hot water and lemon. Drink a glass of water before each meal and snack this will increase your intake drastically and you may even find you don’t eat as much.
Get yourself outdoors
Even when it isn’t sunny outside the sun will give off rays which are full of vitamin D goodness. Many people that work full time especially office workers suffer with vitamin D deficiency as they come to work when its dark, are under artificial light all day and then go home in the dark too. I mean how depressing is that?
In your lunch hour get outside for a 20 minute walk, not only will it aid in de-stressing you it will improve your productivity too. People that don’t frown and aren’t stressed look younger right? At the weekends go for a long country walk with your friends and/or family. Try Vitamin D drops too, they make a massive difference.
Eat your way to youth
What you eat plays a massive part in the way you look. Foods which are rich nutrients helps your cells regenerate giving you younger more radiant looking skin.
Have at least 2 portions of oily fish per week.
Blueberries are rich in anti-oxidants so ensure to snack on them regularly (they are great in smoothies or with Greek Yogurt).
Red peppers are rich in wrinkle- fighting vitamin C, so add them to your meals, they are great stuffed with couscous and feta cheese or cut up and thrown in your stir-fry.
Tomatoes contain lycopene; a carotenoid that helps the skin appear smoother. They are so versatile you can add them to just about any meal.
Reduce your negativity
If you are constantly thinking by putting yourself down you will attract negative people you will soon start to believe these negative thoughts. Have you noticed whenever someone is called ‘bitter’ it comes hand in hand with being old?! Try a live more carefree and spontaneously
Practice Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) this isn’t something that comes easy, that’s why I say practice. Try and see things in a positive light, bad things will always happen when you least expect them to (there is NEVER a good time) however how you deal with them will have a huge effect on you and the people around you.
We all know that certain times of the month or times in our life hormones can affect us in so many ways; from our energy levels, moods, digestion to our growth. These are all vitally important so if you don’t want to look old before your time work with your hormones to ensure you are functioning optimally.
Eat plenty of cruciferous vegetables like kale and broccoli, ligans from flax and sesame seeds (easily sprinkled on to salads) and good fats like coconut oil, avocado, nuts and oily fish. Supplements which aid hormone balance are magnesium citrate, green tea, sage tea and liquorice root.
Be More Active
Being active is not just about your weight it also prevents life threatening diseases and keeps you more able for later on in life. People that were more active when they were younger are a lot more active until an older age. They have better posture, more muscle and bone strength. Exercise also increases blood flow which helps to nourish skin cells as well by releasing feel good hormones.
Find a form of exercise you enjoy, there are so many different types to be enjoyed. We usually tend to do the things we are good at however don’t forget to work on your weaker points. Joining a group exercise class has extra benefits of feeling part of a community which boosts confidence and self-esteem.
Quit your krux
Whether it be smoking, alocohol or junk food there are always tell-tale signs that you do one or more of these harmful habits. We have all seen the ‘cat’s bum’ wrinkles around the mouth and the yellow finger nails of smokers, the red vains in the eyes of heavy drinkers and overweight and bad skin of junk food eaters.
Get the help you need to quit or at least reduce these harmful habits. We all know the risks of excessive smoking and alcohol, if that doesn’t deter you enough. Think about your family and the people around you. You are reducing your life considerably which means the people that love you will not get as much time with you.
Sleep like you mean it!
Sleep is crucial to feeling younger and healthier. Not getting enough sleep can change the course of your day. Not having enough sleep is said to accelerate the rate of aging and age related illnesses such as memory loss and diabetes.
Aim to get 8 hours sleep per night, have a routine each night and wind down rather than stimulating yourself with electronics. If you don’t sleep well there will usually be a reason, there are many ways in which you can improve the quality of your sleep.
- Don’t have caffeine after 3pm
- Ensure you get some carbs at your last meal of the day which induces sleepiness
- Read a book for 30 minutes before bed
- Write down a to do list for the next day (you will feel more focussed and less anxious)
- Do not use electronics at least an hour before bed
- Don’t exercise last thing in the evening
- Don’t have high sugar snacks after your tea
