Healthy Eating Habits
Over the Winter we settle into routines and form habits that won’t necessarily serve us in the Summer if we want to get in shape; such as sleeping in, eating heavy dinners and hiding indoors from the cold. However, Summer is the time to embrace the outdoors and refresh our lifestyles. Time for healthy eating!
Here’s five healthy habits that will get you ready for the Summer so that you can keep your health and fitness in check.
Get up earlier
The sun is rising earlier and setting later, greatly extending our days. Start training yourself to wake up earlier with the sun and making the most of your mornings. This will give you plenty of time to prepare a good breakfast which is crucial to properly fuel you. Also take advantage of the warm weather and enjoy breakfast outside.
Working out first thing in the morning is a crucial element in setting your mood and energy for the day and is also effective to boost your metabolism. Completing your workout first thing in the morning before the temperature rises is a good way to beat the Summer heat. Physical exertion can be very energising but exercising in heat can have the adverse effect and leave you physically drained.
Try something new
A good way to make a change to your lifestyle is to bring something new to your life. If you want to improve your health, fitness and confidence for the Summer time, now is the perfect time to start a new activity. Whether it’s starting morning runs, a new workout routine, joining a sport club or even a fitness class, go with what holds the most interest and appeal for you.
Eat more fruit
The warmer weather brings a huge amount of seasonal fruit and you should definitely take advantage of what’s on offer. There’s a theory that sticking to a seasonal diet is key because, what the Earth provides at certain times is really what our bodies need. The explosion of fruit in the Summer time is the Earth providing us with our natural energy source, which is fruit with natural sugars for energy and water content for hydration. Avoid processed packet food and sweets and indulge in nature’s confectionery instead. Fruit is a perfect snack for in-between meals since it digests quickly and will provide the energy and hydration your body needs to stay healthy.
Drink more water
This is an important habit to keep our bodies happy. During the Winter our water intake tends to lower since we aren’t as quickly dehydrated, but during Summer, moisture is lost through sweat so we need to replenish our water levels. Aim for 2-4 litres per day but this is different for everybody so listen to your body – when you’re thirsty have a drink and yes…. tea and coffee counts.
By learning to change your lifestyle for each season you can ensure that you’ll remain your fittest and healthiest, no matter what the weather.
