Now I know this time of year we all find it difficult to fight our hibernation instinct as it’s just so cold! We long to wear our flip flops and top up the tan. It’s February and spring time is a while off so let’s find some fun ways to keep active this winter!

The key to remember is that SUMMER bodies are made in the WINTER! So whatever you do now is setting you up for the short shorts and floral dress weather…

WALKING

No need to spend lots of money and it’s an effective cardio workout not to mention EASY to do! So grab your thermal undies and layer up so you can take them off as you get warmer. Start off at a slower pace, take in the scenery and fresh air and then walk at a brisk rate for 20 minutes. If you make just one change to your lifestyle this would be one I urge anyone to do. Walking benefits you both mentally and physically and you can do it as a family activity walking to a pond to feed the ducks is a personal favourite. (Unless there’s swans, those things scare me since a bad childhood experience!)

PLAYING

Have you got a few inches of snow outside? To be complaining how cold and annoying it is to enjoy it? We don’t get it often so embrace it, just be prepared. Wrap up well and make sure you get water proof gloves on. True Frozen style you can build a snowman – you don’t have to have kids to do this! When was the last time you did a fun activity for the hell of it with your friends or partner? Sledging is another great workout and loads of fun! Dragging the kids up a hill on them and speeding down is a great rush, I am sure you can pick up a cheap sledge from Argos and have hours of fun. Be sure to sick one of my slow cooker recipes on, so you have something to look forward to!

OUTDOOR BOOTCAMP

I run an outdoor boot camp called Boot camp for Girls, it’s not a plug honest. Some of my girls turn up and they are exhausted, stressed and lacking energy. After a 30 minute session they’re full of life, their patience gauge is full again and they sleep like logs! Find a local outdoor boot camp, even if you’re not sure I BEG you try it. Come rain or shine we do our workouts and we feel great for it.

DREADED JOBS

We all have a few of these round the house that we just keep putting off as you know once you start its going to get much worse before it gets better! Mines paperwork, and I know I should keep on top of it so that it doesn’t mount up but I ALWAYS let it get to the point where I don’t want to do it. I will do ANYTHING even cleaning rather than do it. So as my daughter was a little under the weather last week, I made her a den and put her favourite movie on and just got on with it. I cannot tell you how good it felt to have it done. My daughter loved her den and I got 105 minutes of peace and quiet! That in itself was a victory but to sort all my paperwork out was priceless!

HOME WORKOUTS

I do appreciate we are not all outdoorsy type people, so home workouts can be the best way for you to stay in shape in the winter months. There are literally hundreds of home workouts you can try, I find timed circuits or AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible) suit me due to my competitive nature. If I have a set routine I find I don’t push myself as hard. Try this 20 minute AMRAP

10 Push Ups (on your knees if need be put aim for nose to be an inch from the floor)

10 Squats (aim for thighs to be parallel to the floor)

10 Crunches (Finger tips at temple bring the elbows to the thigh)

10 Mountain Climber (drive the knees towards the chest)

See how many rounds you can complete in 20 minutes

USE YOUR TIME WISELY

  • So you are going to be spending more time in the house, that’s a given. What you choose to do in the evenings will soon become habits. So get in to a routine that really works for you here are a few ideas you could do
  • When you have put the kids to bed although they are still ‘trying their luck’ using every single excuse they can think of to get up. Use that time to get ready for the next day – make packed lunches, do the dishes, set tomorrows clothes out even sort washing loads ready to go on. That way the kids know you’re ignoring them and soon lose interest and go to bed!
  • Get up in the morning and put your gym kit on, that way after the school drop off your ready to do your home workout. I also find after working out I do my best housework as I am not bothered about working up a sweat or getting dirty.
  • When you come in from work, don’t sit down! This might sound silly, but as soon as you sit down and stop it’s GAME OVER! You have been busy all day and once you stop it’s just so much harder to keep going. You’re much more likely to order a takeaway as the idea of chopping vegetables or cutting up meat feels like the end of the world. So go upstairs get changed and get on with dinner straight away. Assign little jobs for everyone so that you can all sit down and enjoy your family dinner

WARM FUZZY FEELINGS

What better way to keep you busy and be active than to pay it forward. I am a big fan of this movie and really think the concept is fabulous. I have been on the receiving end and giving end and both feel great. There a few ways you can do this, here are a few ideas:

Offer to mind a friend’s child for a few hours to give them a much needed break

Give your expertise to a person in need of it for free – no catch!

Go out of your way to make someone’s day every day!

Do something for a stranger to make them smile – I once bought a bottle of water and a flapjack for a bin worker!

Volunteering – this could be in a soup kitchen, a charity shop, helping in a hospital or youth centre. If start your own service for people you feel are in need

LEARN A NEW SKILL

Keeping the brain active counts too! There are literally 1000’s of online course you can choose from and most come on a monthly payment plan so you don’t have to break the bank! Is there something you always say you would love to do but you don’t have the time? How many hours per week do you want TV or sit on Facebook? These hours could be used to get your DREAM job! That’s what I did. When my daughter was 4 weeks old I registered to do an OU History degree (I recently got the certificate through) at the time it was hard to stay motivated. I also enrolled to do my PT course as well that was something I had ALWAYS wanted to do but didn’t have the time. Even with a child and working (part time hours) I still managed to do both. Now I can work for myself doing something I love! Last night I had 1.5 hours sleep and I honestly love my job so much I am sat here with my HULK MODE smoothie smiling!
