Fitness – it’s not just about you

It’s a well-known fact that the people who successfully manage their weight and stay fit are those who take regular exercise and sensible eating as a matter of habit. The same goes for your children and if you’re a parent you must set a good example and encourage your kids to be active.

Make ‘Healthy’ a habit

A life of bad eating habits and hardly any physical activity can lead to a host of health problems, so if you exercise with your kids it will provide you with a great opportunity to help them for the rest of their lives. Make eating healthy a normal, regular thing by reducing the amount of junk food you have in the home. Set aside designated exercise time so that you are showing your kids that exercising is as important as other routines within the family.

Lead by example

If you get the chance to exercise with your child you are not only teaching them how to have a healthy lifestyle, you’re also creating strong family bonds. It’s a great idea for busy parents who wouldn’t get as much exercise as they need without incorporating their kids into the routine. Kids naturally want to copy their parents, so if you’re going out to exercise whether it’s a class, a walk or a run, they’re less likely to think twice about going out with you, rather than staying in watching TV.

Over the years I’ve had clients who have cut back their exercise regime as soon they started a family, then struggled to get back on track due to childcare commitments. As a result of this I have been adapting some of the classes that I offer, so that they are both adult and family friendly.

I’ll use Metafit as an example here:

It’s a 30min high impact class, so for those adults who want to bring a teenager along it’s ideal. It won’t eat into their homework time too much and for you, it’s time spent getting in shape whilst enjoying companionship with your child and being a positive role model. At the other end of the spectrum it’s a great class for those who need to bring along very young children. I have a couple of clients who bring their babies along as the class is a short enough time for babies to stay interested enough to not cry or even sleep through. Either way my clients are able to keep up their fitness levels and set that all important example of health, fitness and wellbeing.

So, for those parents who say they’re too busy my questions is…….what are you waiting for?
